Signs of chronic stress

Last week we learned about how the stress reponse is supposed to work. In periods of low stress, this system is well regulated.

However, we face too many stressors too frequently, for an extended period of time, the HPA axis system begins to break down. The signal from to your body that is supposed to alert the brain that the stress is over and start to calm down, fails to register. It’s the equivalent of failing to take your foot off the gas when you are applying the brakes to your car, the stress response stays turned on.

How do you know if you are in a state of chronic stress?

These are some of the major symptoms:

  • Chronic pain - muscles feel tight, nerves are sensitive

  • GI issues - changes in digestion, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea

  • Brain fog - forgetfulness, impulsive behavior, moody, insecure

  • Weight gain - higher cravings, slower metabolism

  • Weakened immune health - frequent bouts of sickness, wounds are slower to heal

All of these symptoms can range in severity but are all signs you are experiencing chronic stress.
