Summer travel series: short trip strategies
Short Trip Strategies:
When you are traveling short distances the best strategy is always to avoid the highway exit options if possible. When you are only traveling short distances, keeping your food choices within your locus of control is going to make your rest stops more efficient, cost effective, and healthy.
Two best options
Eat before you go - When you are going on a short trip. Eating a decent sized meal before you head out allows you to consume a meal with significantly healthier ingredients, while eliminating the hassle of making on the road meal decisions, and reducing the temptation to eat junk.
Bring a snack box - If you have more of a grazing eating style and find yourself eating a lot of small meals throughout the day, the snack box option is a great way to travel. When we travel with the kids, this strategy minimizes the need to stop on the road with limited options for healthy snacks. Before we head out we pack a snack box with these types of options:
Portable fruits: apples, pears, clementines, bananas, cherries
Portable vegetables: carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, edamame
Portable protein:boiled eggs, sliced chicken, beef jerky, and protein bars
Portable fats: nuts, seeds, and peanut butter pouches
Carbs: multi-grain crackers, popcorn, and pretzels
