What is Structural Foundations?
My posture story:
Some time after turning 40, I had just finished completing the right of passage challenge with a bell side heavier than prescribed for the men’s weights. It was the most weight I had ever lifted and probably the strongest I have ever been. I felt fine and didn’t have any chronic pain issues, though my back would hurt after a long car ride or any long period of sitting. The next thing that happened was that whenever I would sneeze, I would get this 9/10 stabbing pain in my back. It was very brief but pretty painful when it happened. It got to the point that I had to brace myself whenever I would sneeze. I went to my “tried and true” professionals: chiropractor, acupunturist, and massage therapist. While all of these modalities helped provide me some temporary relief, unfortunately nothing seemed to cure the sneezing problem I was having. I took time off of training with kettlebells at the request of these professionals and to be perfectly honest, single sided bell work especially with the bell in my left hand didn’t feel great. After a year with a lot of stretching and little change, I decided that I must be missing something and dove into learning more about structure and function.
I also started treating myself like a client, I took my first set of posture photos and was shocked by how out of whack my static posture was. I had assumed because my movement screen was good, that my posture was fine. You can see in that first photo on the left (in black). Look at where my hips are compared to where my torso is. My knees are locked out (what I now call banana knees) hips forward ,my shoulders are shifted back and rounded. In other words, I looked like a slinky.
This is not far off from the typical posture we see as we do evaluations on our new clients. What I was beginning to discover was that despite all of the kettlebell swings and heavy lifting, I was deficient in my posture where I needed it to be able to handle the ballistic load: my deep core, my glutes and my mid back. This is was my ah-ha moment and the start of my quest to get my posture back. Skip to the end. I have been able to sneeze without any pain for about 2 years now and back discomfort might crop up after a long day of heavy yard work but I can address it and be pain free by the end of that evening.
From my own quest to solve my own problem and a lot of work with clients on the same issues, I realized that I had to take posture correction down to the nuts and bolts. From the most basic of structural control exercises, I could then layer on additional components to make the exercises more complex. This is where the structural foundations 10 week course came to exist.
What is Structural Foundations?
The structural foundation series at KORE Wellness is a systematic approach designed to improve postural integrity through systematically teaching the biomechanics in a way that you learn how to restore proper alignment in your body. This couse gives you the tools to prevent or reduce modern day issues like tech neck, shoulder pain, low back pain, carpel tunnel, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.
This series is a 10 week enrollment where you and your classmates will learn which muscles are your micromanagers and which are your couch potatoes. You’ll not only learn about banana knees, duck butts, and quasi-backs, but also how you prevent these micromanagers from taking over your existence.
The 10-week cohort is a closed-group where you and your classmates are free to learn the structural foundations exercises in a controlled environment with a greater sense of connection where each participant can feel safer to share and engage.
At the end of the 10-week session, after passing testing, you can decide to move on to the next level of exercises, or take the exercises learned home to implement into an at home training program if you feel you need more time before advancing.
We are running a Beta Test for the Structural Foundations course staring October 6th. The group will have a maximum of 10 students. We will take the week of Thanksgiving off and finish up the week before Christmas.
If you are not currently a member at KORE or you know someone who might benefit from being a part of this Beta Group the discounted price is $150 for the 10 week course split into two payments at 5 week intervals of $75. The link to sign up is below:
